Dear Steve,
I am sending this brief note to thank you for you prompt and
professional cryogenic tempering service on our rifle barrels. I thought you
might also be interested in a synopsis of our experience with cryo treating.
Having seen many fads for rifle accuracy come and go (I.e. electric
barrel bedders), we tend to be skeptical of miracle cures. Hence, we were slow
to adopt cryo treating our gun barrels. Before embracing cryo, we collected information
from our client base (mostly competitive rifle shooters), a metallurgist (who had
rolled metal plate under liquid nitrogen), and two barrel blank suppliers. From this we
anticipated at least two benefits from cryo, one for the gunsmith or barrel maker, and one
for the shooter.
One blank supplier reported significant improvement in
machineability from incorporating cryo in their process, the other reported test showing
significant improvement in accurate life of the barrel as a result of cryo
particularly, the higher the carbon content of the steel, the greater the benefit. The
double-cryo cycle you perform for us is per their recommendation, as is
the harder, high carbon magnetic stainless we now use. We are keeping accurate records of
these two barrels fired in competition. While neither has enough rounds down range to go
sour, throat erosion measurements are very encouraging, and we expect sufficient
improvement in accurate life to make the cryo-treatment a bargain.
While we are particularly skeptical of anecdotal reports, we have
one to share. We spent some time helping a client with a really temperamental Sako .308
varmint rifle. As you may know, these superb rifles are noted for excellent accuracy right
out of the box. Except this one. It would deliver maddeningly accurate sub-moa groups one
day, and two inch groups the next, with the same ammunition. We tried different loads,
adjusted the bedding, re-crowned the barrel, blue-printed the action and re-cut the
chamber to match specifications, all without worthwhile improvement. More or less in
desperation, we had you cryo-treat the barrel and receiver. Bingo! Consistent
one-ragged-hole groups. I wont attempt to explain it, but it sure
worked!
Sincerely,
Bruce
